Boring instructor, step is unnecessary, but good workoutFeb 13, 2009 The music is okay in this one. I find Pam to be a boring instructor, though she is a nice lady. I prefer more dynamic leaders. She is obviously a former dancer. She has perfect form. She looks undernourished here, though. I have no problem with seeing women of different body types lead workouts, but she just looked a little too thin.
The warm-up and entire routine is done barefoot by Pam and her little crew of fellow instructors. The warm-up is pretty challenging, though, and I really prefer to do this workout with my shoes on. It just feels safer and more supportive.
I find the step to be completely unnecessary to the routine. I do the entire workout without it, and I still have to work hard. The step just seems to be a gimmick in this workout. It hurts your hands, hips, knees and arms to try to balance on this step. I just do everything on the floor, and it's much more comfortable, especially for a full-figured woman like me. I suppose the sculpting stick could be used for someone , but dumbbells work better for outer and inner thigh lifts, IMHO. I'm not advanced enough to need anything but my own body weight- my legs are heavy enough on their own! This is very thorough- it works the front of the thighs (which is frequently ignored in Firm workouts), the hamstrings, the inner and outer thighs. It also has bridge work. I would consider it to be a very complete floor workout for the legs and butt.
The ab work is separated so that you can do it alone, or with the leg work, which is nice. It's pretty challenging.
All in all, I like this workout, but I prefer Lower Body Sculpting from 1993 (a compilation of floor work from the classics series), Lower Body Sculpt 2 or Sculpted Buns, Hips and Thighs.

Needs too much extra equipment; bad music.Oct 11, 2008 When I first put this in my DVD player, I had to fast forward through several minutes of Firm ads. Then, I realized that I needed a Firm step and a weighted bar. (You could use a Pilates box, or a high step bench, and dumbbells, so I think the need for equipment is not insurmountable, if you have some other exercise equipment around.) Then, the first opening shots started, and I had the immediate negative reaction I have to standard aerobics filming techniques, "Oh no. This is going to be hard to watch."
I was wrong, though. The lighting is bright enough, and there was some set design in terms of moving green lights behind abstract panels. The instructor seems like your typical 'strong Southern woman', which, if you like that sort of thing, is a real plus. Having gotten past my initial negative first impression, I settled in to work out.
Then the music started. Bad, bad, bad. It reminded me of the Soviet-era synthesizer music I brought home from pre-Wall-falling Romania during a Youth Orchestra tour in 1985. (Apologies to the Soviets.) The music is so unlistenable that I couldn't watch the rest of the DVD.
This would be good, if not for the music. If you are bothered by bad music, buy something else.
Fantastic moves to more toned abs and thighsApr 11, 2007 One of my favorites in the Firm Series. Best 30 minute workout for the hips, thighs and abs. You definitely feel the burn during workout and next day. Very effective, gets the job done saw visible results in more toned thighs and abs. Excellent target training DVD in this Series.

Hips, tighs and AbsMar 22, 2007 It is ok I think but too many tools are needed to do it properly. I travel a lot and can't take things with me all around, so don't use it much but if you have all the tools at home it is effective. The abs section is at the end and very short too, mostlly focused on hips and tighs.

DisappointmentMar 01, 2007 First of all, let me say that while seeing a thin woman usually doesn't trouble me, I agree with another reviewer that Pam and Christa look AWFUL in this video. Scrawny, emaciated, fragile. The workout itself isn't nearly as challenging for lower body as I'd hoped - I've been doing the Lower Body Sculpt (with Jen Carman) which is tough even after you've been doing it for a while, and this just doesn't compare. Don't bother.
